Did you know that putting rechargeable batteries (and items containing them) in bins can lead to a costly emergency?
The photo below shows what happened when a rechargeable battery was put into a recycling bin. Known as a ‘hot load’, it had to be emptied immediately so Fire Rescue Victoria can safely put the fire out. We’ve seen an increase in fires like these over the past year.
The clean-up for this emergency involved a bobcat, two fire trucks and thousands of litres of water to put out the fire. It took three hours, and multiple people attended including the fire brigade, our recycling contractor, and Council officers. Two additional trucks were needed to take the damaged recyclables to landfill. The recycling truck needed repairs and was out of operation for many days.
You probably have at least one item at home that contains a rechargeable battery: mobile phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, toys, e-bikes, electric toothbrushes and e-cigarettes are all powered by them. They might make our lives easier, but they are at risk of catching fire when they get damaged, like when they are compacted in a recycling or garbage truck. Help us keep our rubbish and recycling truck drivers safe.
Batteries, and items that contain them, must never go into your bins. To dispose of them responsibly, find a location near you:
