Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is a significant project that has the potential to change how we move around metropolitan Melbourne and influence where we work, learn and live.
SRL is currently being planned and constructed by the Victorian Government, via the Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA).
The first stage of the project - SRL East - includes 26km of underground rail tunnels and six new train stations between Cheltenham and Box Hill. Two new stations will be constructed within the City of Whitehorse – one in Box Hill and the other in Burwood.
Council is working closely with SRLA to ensure that the interests of our community are well represented, based on the feedback we hear during Council's community engagement activities.
Station and tunnel works
The project approval phase for the tunnels, stations and associated infrastructure is now complete (called the Environmental Effects Statement), and the initial and early works have commenced. These are the works that prepare the land for the main works. The designs for the main works are still being prepared by SRLA. You can read more about the planning approval stages of the project on the SRLA website.
Tree planting
The removal of vegetation is an impact of this project. Council continues to advocate for the protection of existing trees while working with the SRLA to manage the impacts of the removals. As part of this effort, Council is collaborating with SRLA to plant replacement trees near affected areas. So far, SRLA has funded Council to grow, plant and maintain approximately 250 trees, with many more to come. Learn more about the tree planting efforts in this article and on SRLA’s website.
Precinct Planning
Planning is underway by SRLA to develop Structure Plans for the neighbourhoods surrounding each SRL station. Structure Plans will guide the increase in housing, employment and community facilities to cater for the growing population.
