We spent $2.45 million, with additional support from the Federal Government, to renew these local roads:

• Marlborough Street, Mont Albert
• Wallace Road, Burwood
• Monash Street, Box Hill South
• Laneway 203, Mitcham (between Haines Street and Mitcham Road)
• Troy Court, Forest Hill.

Works included road resurfacing, replacement of driveways, gutters, and drainage improvements.

Across Whitehorse’s 637km network of roads and laneways, we invested $1.55 million into local road surface re-sheeting and $1.16 million to replace older gutters.

Vermont South Bowls Club extension

Project cost: $2.89 million

These works included an extension of the function area, a new bar space, meeting room, external decking and external access ramps and steps. Contributions from the Federal Government and club helped fund this project.

Blackburn Cycling Club upgrade

Project cost: $744,000 (State Government grant)

We completed an upgrade and extension of the Blackburn Cycling Club Pavilion. Works included a new female-friendly change room, accessible toilet and shower, an extended multipurpose/training space, upgraded kitchen facilities, a first aid and cleaner’s space and additional refurbishments.

Scout hall upgrades

Project cost: $1.91 million

We upgraded 4 scout halls to improve their functionality. Works were completed at the following halls:

• 1st Bennettswood Scout Hall
• 6th Box Hill Scout Hall
• 11th Box Hill Scout Hall
• Milpara Scout Hall

We spent $1.82 million to renew and upgrade sections of the 867km Whitehorse storm water drainage network. This included upgrades in:

• Valency Court, Mitcham
• Grey Street, Vermont
• Luckie Street/Vigilant Avenue intersection in Nunawading.

Grey Street, Vermont drainage upgrade

Project cost: $61,000

In response to feedback from local residents, we removed and replaced the existing drainage with new pipe, kerb and drainage pits, and restored affected pavement, driveways and nature strips.

We spent $3.16 million on footpath renewals across the city’s 1,175km footpath network. Council does regular asset condition assessments to prioritise these works and responds to resident requests.

We spent $255,000 to upgrade gravel paths in parks, providing a safer path network for the community. We replaced the existing path surfaces to reduce washout and waterlogging issues. Upgrades were completed in Wurundjeri Walk, Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve, Gardiners Creek Reserve, Moresby Dale and Cootamundra Walk.

Poole Street Reserve, Burwood Boardwalk improvement

Project cost: $391,000

We improved safety and accessibility of the boardwalk on the western side of Poole Street Reserve in Burwood, widening it and replacing it with a new, durable, low-maintenance surface.

Wood Park, Nunawading path upgrade

Project cost: $62,000

The pedestrian path in Wood Park was prone to flooding during rain and was upgraded from a gravel surface to a safer, more accessible and wider concrete path.

Vermont Reserve sports field renewal

Project cost: $2.03 million (partly funded by a State Government grant)

The renewal of the Vermont Reserve sports field included an upgrade to the boundary fence, irrigation, drainage, playing surface and a small extension to the sporting field. Additional safety netting was also installed, with a
perimeter footpath and synthetic cricket wicket run-ups.

Hagenauer Reserve Athletics Track lighting upgrade

Project cost: $400,000 (State Government grant)

We installed a new LED lighting system on the track and field at Hagenauer Reserve.

Basketball court upgrades at Lundgren Chain Reserve and Stephens Reserve

Project cost: $98,000

We upgraded the old asphalt basketball pads in Lundgren Chain Reserve, Burwood, and Stephens Reserve, Vermont. Both courts were replaced with a new concrete playing surface, basketball ring and netball ring.

Safety improvements at Surrey Park

Project cost: $27,000

To improve the safety of pedestrians and traffic on Surrey Drive, we installed a 45-metre safety net behind the goals on the south-east oval at Surrey Park, Box Hill.

Pedestrian safety improvements in Box Hill

Project cost: $330,000

We improved safety by reducing vehicle speeds and increasing visibility of pedestrians crossing the road by constructing 2 new raised pedestrian crossings. These were constructed at the intersections of Station Street/Ashted Road and Station Street/Oxford Street in Box Hill. The crossings were implemented as part of the Box Hill Integrated Transport Strategy. Other active transport improvements totalling $272,000 included:

• safety improvements to traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Springfield and Williams Roads, Blackburn North
• a new school crossing constructed in Piedmont Street, Box Hill South in front of Kingswood College
• improved bike access into Slater Reserve, with a new ramp constructed at the end of Killeen Avenue, Blackburn North

Play space upgrades

Project cost: $774,000

We made place space upgrades at Elgar Park, Slater Reserve and Pickford Paddock. The Slater Reserve play space in Blackburn North includes 2 slides, a tunnel slide, triple swing set, nest swing, rope climbing structure, wheelchair-friendly carousel and 2 rockers, and was funded by a State Government grant.

Nunawading Shopping Centre streetscape upgrades

Project cost (to date): $332,000

We began a streetscape upgrade of the Nunawading Shopping Centre along the eastern side of Springvale Road, between Whitehorse Road and Walkers Road. We replaced paving, street furniture, garden beds, driveway crossovers and pram crossings. Completion of east side works is expected in 2024/25 and will be followed by an upgrade of the western side.

Arcade Road Shopping Centre, Mont Albert North landscaping upgrade

Project cost: $69,000

We improved the paving and gutters, restored street furniture, installed turf and renewed garden beds at the shopping centre.

Morack Public Golf Course Pavilion redevelopment

Project cost: $12.17 million

Morack Public Golf in Vermont South officially opened in March this year, with a rebuilt multipurpose pavilion, 28-bay driving range and mini-golf.

The Round

Project cost: $78 million

The Round, located in Nunawading, is a premier performing arts space, hosting plays, musicals, operas, ballets, children’s shows and more. This wonderful new venue opened in October 2023, and has had over 110,000 people through the doors. It is also available for venue hire.

Box Hill City Oval Pavilion upcoming redevelopment

The pavilions and other facilities at Box Hill Oval will undergo a major redevelopment, providing a multi-purpose and inclusive space for use by the community and tenant clubs. It will be redeveloped over the coming years, thanks to shared investment from Council and the state and federal governments.
