Queensland Fruit Fly is a pest of many fruiting plants including citrus, apples, stone fruit, berries and tomatoes.
Adults lay their eggs in developing fruit and their maggots feast on the flesh of the fruit as it ripens. This makes fruit inedible.
At this stage we do not know if Queensland Fruit Fly has made its way into Whitehorse but we do know it has been found in Knox, Manningham and Darebin.
It is important that all residents keep an eye out for this pest. Finding Queensland Fruit Fly in our home grown produce may be annoying but for commercial growers in the nearby Yarra Valley it is devastating. This is why we must all take on the responsibility of making sure we are not accidentally harbouring this pest.
To help you detect if you have this pest, please access the Nillumbik Shire Council Seminar on YouTube.
What you can do:
- Follow the links below to learn about the Queensland Fruit Fly
- Ask your friends and neighbours if they are aware of it
- Remove any fruiting plants from your garden that you are not actively managing. Check with the planning department if a permit is required to remove trees.
- If you see Fruit Fly email Council at trees@whitehorse.vic.gov.au
Local Governments are not responsible for managing this pest but if we know there is a need, we can organise education sessions for local residents and keep Agriculture Victoria informed.
