Blackburn Lake Sanctuary came alive with laughter, curiosity, and exploration as families gathered for Nature Play, a special event celebrating Children’s Week in October. The event welcomed children from just a few months old to teenagers, along with their parents and grandparents.
With more than 80 attendees, the Sanctuary provided the perfect backdrop for a range of thoughtfully designed outdoor activities that encouraged hands-on learning and imaginative play. Families wandered through bushland paths on themed scavenger hunts, searching for hidden treasures and engaging with their surroundings in fun and educational ways. Children got creative making their own rattlers and shakers from recycled bottles, quiet corners offered opportunities for mindful colouring and reading nature-themed books, while puzzles and playdough gave young minds a chance to focus, build, and explore through tactile play. Book donations from the local Lions Club 123read2me program allowed families to take home free books.
The event was not only a celebration of play but also informed the community about Children’s Rights. Nature Play was a shining example of how community programs can foster lifelong connections with nature and promote wellbeing through simple, outdoor experiences.
