New 40 km per hour zone in Box Hill

Published: Friday 04 Jul 2025

To improve road safety for everyone, there is a new safer speed zone for all local roads in the centre of Box Hill.

The new 40 km per hour speed zone comes into effect from 4 July 2025.

The zone includes streets around Box Hill Central, Elgar Road, Box Hill Library and the Box Hill Community Arts Centre.

This map shows the central area of Box Hill where the new 40 km per hour speed limit is in place. The 40km limit applies to local roads, but not the arterial roads (Whitehorse Rd, Elgar Rd and Station St).

Please keep a look out for the new 40km signs when travelling.

The safer 40km speed zone has successfully been in place around Box Hill Hospital since early 2024.

Box Hill is a busy area with many people walking, riding and driving. Safer speeds make room for everyone, as we share our streets and make our neighbourhoods more welcoming and safer for all.

Traffic accidents have a devastating impact on the community. Council wants all people living or visiting Whitehorse to be safe on and around our roads.

This change is part of the Box Hill Integrated Transport Strategy, which aims to improve road safety and make walking more attractive and convenient.
