Works to relocate and upgrade underground utility services are continuing so the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) team can lower the rail into a trench and remove the level crossings on Union Road and Mont Albert Road in 2023.

Works taking place

As part of the works to relocate and upgrade underground utility services, the LXRP team will commence work on the stormwater drainage and watermain upgrades on Union Road, Surrey Hills.

To minimise the disruption for local traders and motorists, the team will work day and night to complete the works as quickly as possible.

Whilst these works are taking place, the LXRP team will also undertake further site investigations on the corner of Union Road and Sunbury Crescent and near the Surrey Hills Station carpark.

What to expect

Traffic management will be in place on Union Road at the level crossing during the day from 10 May for approximately two weeks. As part of these works, LXRP will need to temporarily close up to nine car parks on Union Road and up to three car parks on Croydon Road.

During the night, road closures will be in place on Union Road between Croydon Road and Windsor Crescent from 10pm and 6am from 10 May for approximately three weeks.

The Union Road pedestrian underpass will also be closed during these night works. Pedestrian detours will be in place around Surrey Hills Station to ensure safe access to the station.

Detours for vehicles will be in place via Mont Albert Road, Canterbury Road, Elgar Road and Balwyn Road.

Access to Sunbury Crescent for local traffic only, between 10pm and 6am, east of 27 Sunbury Crescent will be maintained via the Union Road and Sunbury Crescent intersection. Traffic management will be in place to assist.

How this will affect you

In streets affected by road closures, the LXRP team suggests you plan ahead and take steps to minimise the impact to you and your family by parking your vehicle elsewhere if you expect to need your vehicle while the road is closed. If the closure is going to present you with any difficulties, please contact LXRP on 1800 105 105 to discuss your circumstances.

Throughout the work area, some traffic delays are to be expected due to these works.

Traffic management will be in place to keep the public and LXRP work crews safe. Please drive with care and follow the signs and any directions from traffic control staff. Pedestrian and cyclist detours will be in place.

There will be increase in construction noise and activity, with construction vehicles, temporary lighting, equipment and works operating in the area.

Please be aware that works can sometimes take longer than expected due to weather and other factors outside of LXRP control.
