Birds

Do not touch the bird. It may carry avian influenza (bird flu).

As the bird is on private land you need to contact Agriculture Victoria.

  • Report and injured, sick or dead bird to Agriculture Victoria using their online form, or
  • Call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888
  • Wait for their advice before doing anything else

If injured or sick

  • Council will: 
    • Collect the animal
    • Try to contact the owner
    • Take it to a vet

If dead

  • Council will: 
    • Collect the animal
    • Try to contact the owner
    • Make arrangements for the animal if not collected

Native wildlife

Wild animals (not birds)

  • If on private land (including schools):
    • Tell the landowner
  • If on your property:
    • If injured or sick
      • Contact a local vet for advice
    • If dead
      • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for example gloves and double bag the animal in black plastic bags
      • Put it in your general rubbish bin (not FOGO, green waste or recycling), or
      • Take it to:
        Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre
        Burwood Highway & Morack Road, Vermont South VIC 3133
