Some events need approval before they can go ahead.
Depending on your event, you may need an Event Permit from Council, another Council approval or approval from an external agency. This can depend on where your event is held, what activities are planned and whether the event may affect public spaces, neighbours, traffic or safety.
If your event is on private or State land, you need permission from the landowner first. You may also need Council or external approvals if your event affects the local area.
If you are applying for an Event Permit, Council will let you know if other approvals are needed during the assessment process. Some approvals can take several weeks, so it is best to plan early.
When approvals may be needed
You may need approvals if your event includes:
- public land, roads, parks or reserves
- road closures or changes to traffic conditions
- food vendors or temporary food stalls
- liquor
- fireworks or firecrackers
- temporary structures, such as stages, marquees or grandstands
- a large enclosed area or indoor/outdoor entertainment space
- music or live performance
- activities that may affect public transport, emergency services or public safety
Council approvals
Your responsibility as the event organiser
Event organisers are responsible for getting all required approvals before the event.
Council can help identify approvals that may be needed as part of an Event Permit assessment. However, some approvals are issued by other Council departments or external agencies.
If an Event Permit is required, all required approvals must be obtained before the Event Permit can be issued.
