The Nunawading activity centre, encompassing MegaMile, has been designated as a ‘Major Activity Centre’ and Mitcham a ‘Neighbourhood Activity Centre’ under the State Government’s metropolitan strategy Plan Melbourne 2017-2050.
Whitehorse Road forms the spine of the study area, which extends generally between Varman Court Nunawading in the west and Cochrane Street Mitcham in the east.
At its meeting on 21 April 2008, Council adopted the Nunawading/MegaMile Major Activity Centre and Mitcham Neighbourhood Activity Centre Structure Plan. The structure plan has been guiding use and development in the centres since its adoption.
In 2018, Council engaged Plan2Place Consulting to undertake a background report on implementation of the Structure Plan. This report found that many actions of the 2008 Structure Plan have been completed and significant changes, including key State infrastructure projects (level crossing removals) have impacted the centres’ environment, and therefore a revised Structure Plan is necessary.
Council has now embarked on a review of the structure plan.
Mitcham Station Precinct
Mitcham is one of the larger neighbourhood activity centres in the City of Whitehorse, providing retail, commercial, medical, community service and recreational opportunities for the local resident and worker population.
The Mitcham Station Precinct Built Form and Public Realm Guidelines ( PDF 4.63MB)(the Guidelines) identify ways to improve the Mitcham Station Precinct to complement separation of the road and rail crossing completed in 2014.
The Guidelines were adopted by Council in December 2012 and are intended to work together with Council’s existing Nunawading Megamile Major Activity Centre and Mitcham Neighbourhood Activity Centre Structure Plan ( PDF 411.63KB), which was prepared prior to plans to separate the road and rail crossing.
