Whitehorse City Council has 11 Councillors elected by residents to govern the city.
Our Councillors provide updates on their work through columns in Whitehorse News on an alternating schedule (5 Councillors or 6 Councillors each month).

Since my last column, the state government has released the draft plans for the Blackburn Activity Centre. I want to commend the government for listening to Whitehorse Council and residents by removing the Significant Landscape Overlays from the Activity Centre boundaries. It was clear from the volume of submissions made that residents in Blackburn value tree canopy, green spaces, vegetation, wildlife, creeks and reserves. I want to thank the Bellbird Residents Advocacy Group (BRAG) and the Combined Residents of Whitehorse Action Group (CROWAG) for their passionate advocacy. At the time of printing the consultation for the 2nd phase of consultation will have closed and I hope that the government again listens to the feedback from Council and residents. Thank you to all the residents who have contacted me and if you have questions about Council's submission please email me. I'm also proud of all the little things that have happened in my area as a result of residents taking the time to report issues. Getting an extra street light installed so people can feel safe taking their bins out seems like a small thing, but it's the bread and butter of what Council is here to do. Whitehorse has won the Victorian Top Solver Award in the Snap Send Solve Solver of the Year Awards 2026. This is thanks to Council’s excellent resolution rates, fast response times and commitment to keeping residents informed. So if you see something that's not looking right, please either use Snap Send Solve or write to your local Councillor to report an issue.

Lake Ward's tree landscapes and strong neighbourhood character reflect decades of work by Council and our community. Much of Blackburn is protected by Significant Landscape Overlays, which help retain native vegetation, preserve our valued bush character, and ensure buildings and site coverage do not dominate the landscape. If you are planning works on your property, please check whether an overlay applies and follow the requirements, including seeking Council approval where needed. I am often contacted by long‑term residents about unauthorised works – usually done unintentionally – but it is difficult for Council to address these matters after the fact. |

I recently had the pleasure of attending the 100th birthday celebration of a local resident, George. He still lives independently, takes great pride in his rose garden, and enjoys his weekly trips to Forest Hill Chase, a wonderful example of staying active and connected in our community.
In March, Council considered several important matters, including the draft Nunawading Basketball Feasibility Study. The Federal Government has committed $45 million towards this project. As Melbourne and the City of Whitehorse continue to grow, my focus remains on planning and delivering the facilities our community will need into the future. |

A big thank you to community members who suggested installing water fountains near the Somers Street playground and Scout Hall in Mitcham, and in Abbey Walk in Vermont. I am pleased both fountains have now been delivered. These are busy areas used by walkers, runners, cyclists and our four-legged friends. I was delighted to bring these practical, big bang-for-buck ideas to Council and grateful for my colleagues’ support to see them delivered. Thank you to everyone who takes the time to share ideas with me. Your local knowledge helps shape practical improvements that benefit the whole community. Please keep the ideas coming! |

In Sparks Ward we're fortunate to have 3 Neighbourhood and Community Houses: Clota Cottage, Box Hill South and Louise Multicultural Centre. I was pleased to advocate for more funding at a recent Council meeting. |

Days shorten, leaves fade and fall and before you know it, we're on the cusp of another Melbourne winter. By the time this is read we will hopefully have fully functioning motion sensor lighting and a newly installed perimeter track at Terrara Park. Should Melbourne weather continue to cool and dampen, residents will still be able to exercise at this popular destination year-round. Ward door knocking continues with many terrific conversations, ideas for improvement and recommendations for repairs. I always enjoy my time chatting with residents and I'll hopefully speak with you soon. If not at your doorstep you can always catch me on the contact links below. Facebook - Councillor Jarrod Gunn |
