Follow these tips adapted from Life Saving Victoria to help you prepare for a safe and fun day out in the water. |
- Whether you are going to the beach, the pool, or swimming in waterways, children must always be supervised.
- Check the weather and the VicEmergency app before leaving. It can notify you of any closures and serious weather warnings.
- Know your own swimming capabilities and never swim alone if you are uncomfortable.
- Avoid drinking alcohol around water and water activities.
- Learn CPR and know what to do in an emergency.
- If you are going to the beach, download the Beachsafe app to your device and check conditions and find your nearest patrolled beach. Wherever possible, swim at a beach patrolled by lifesavers and between the red and yellow flags.
- For inland waterways and lakes, take time to observe conditions before entering the water. They might have hidden dangers such as submerged objects, debris, snags and strong currents. Speak to locals or park rangers for advice if you’re unsure.
- If visiting a public pool, follow the pool rules and directions from lifeguards. Children under 10 must be constantly and actively supervised, and children under five must stay within arm’s reach during recreational play activities.
- If in a private pool or at home, ensure your pool/spa fence is compliant, well maintained and registered with council.
