New lights for Surrey Park Baseball Field
The Melbourne Baseball Club now has competition standard baseball field lighting installed at its ground at Surrey Park.
The new lights will enable year-round access to the baseball diamond into the evening, allowing for more players to participate in the sport through training events and night games.
The Level Crossing Removal Project has been using the northwest part of Surrey Park as a location for its equipment and site offices during the Level Crossing Removal at Mont Albert.
As a consequence, the Victorian Government authority was obliged to mitigate the impact on community sport and amenity.
While the LXRP was willing to fund lighting at the baseball diamond up to the standard suitable for training, other stakeholders thought we could do better.
With top-up contributions from Melbourne Baseball Club and Melbourne Cricket Club, and Council providing in-kind support of project management, we were able to negotiate for competition grade lighting to be installed.
A constructive, creative approach, with good faith negotiations between the parties has resulted in a better outcome with much greater enduring benefits to the community. Council will continue to stand with the community to negotiate for the best possible outcomes.
