The Mullum Mullum Valley is recognised for the richness of its biodiversity and is known to provide habitat to many different plants, birds and other wildlife, but have you seen the fascinating aquatic macroinvertebrates (waterbugs) that live in the Mullum Mullum Creek?
Macroinvertebrates that live in the creek include larvae, nymphs, aquatic beetles, worms, and true bugs. They can be a challenge to find and an even greater challenge to identify. Join Gay Gallagher, John Helstroom and Robert Stephenson, participants in the Melbourne Water Waterwatch program for this event, where you will use water samples collected from the creek and identify the macroinvertebrates found - with the added benefit of using our digital microscope to make identification easy.
You can also learn a little about how important macroinvertebrates are to the ecosystem and their key role as key indicator species in identifying the health of waterways. Upload your observations during the activity to iNaturalist to be part of the Great Southern Blitz.
This event is in collaboration with the Yarran Dheran Parkland Advisory Committee, for the City Nature Challenge, an event to gather observation data about the species inhabiting our natural world. This is your chance to learn about all the plants and animals that live in our Whitehorse parks and reserves! Spots are limited so be sure to register your attendance.
We will be meeting at the Yarran Dheran Information Centre for a 2pm start.
Download the iNaturalist app and then search for plants and animals. Not an expert on plants and animals? Great! This is your chance to learn something new and fascinating. iNaturalist has the ability to suggest species for you, so you don't need to worry about not being an expert! You can use the app at any time too, no need to wait for a challenge.
