Audits and inspections
Council runs regular bin audits to help keep our waste and recycling services accurate and effective. During these audits, bin auditors check the bins at properties to confirm our records match what is on site.
This may include:
- recording bin types, sizes and serial numbers
- taking photos of bins
- door knocking to confirm details if needed.
Any information collected is used only for Council purposes and will not be shared publicly.
Gold star bin education program
As part of these visits, Council may also carry out the Gold Star Bin Education Program. This program involves a visual check of household recycling and food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bins, along with feedback tags to help residents use their bins correctly.
The program aims to support residents to:
- understand what can and cannot go in recycling and FOGO bins
- reduce contamination, which can cause entire truckloads of material to be sent to landfill
- protect workers and the community by keeping hazardous items, such as batteries and electronic waste, out of household bins
- improve recycling and composting outcomes and reduce the need for new raw materials.
Residents who use their bins correctly are automatically entered into a monthly draw to win a $50 Coles Myer gift card.
