It is an offence under the Building Act 1993 to carry out building works without a permit and financial penalties can occur. Council may investigate any enquiries or complaints in relation to suspected illegal building works.

Enforcement action may be undertaken in the event of non-compliance. The Victorian Building Authority provide an outline of the types of Building Notices and Orders that can be issued.
