Whitehorse City Council and Deakin University partner until 2030 to turn aspirations into community impact

Published: Wednesday 05 Nov 2025

Whitehorse City Council and Deakin University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) setting out shared collaboration aspirations for the next five years.

Whitehorse Mayor Andrew Davenport said the MOU provides a framework to strengthen the relationship between the two organisations and to deliver even greater results for both the community and students.

“We share a commitment to boosting outcomes across employment, education, training, community health and wellbeing, and the environment. By cementing our partnership, we will be able to create significant impact and opportunities for the community.”

Deakin Vice Chancellor Professor Iain Martin said the partnership and relationship with the Whitehorse City Council is an important one for the communities in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

“With the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City, we look forward to closer collaboration in a number of different areas, including Deakin staff and student engagement and work opportunities, research opportunities, environmental benefits, and innovation, to name but a few.”

Some key highlights of the relationship across innovation, community, and the environment include:

  • A formalised student internship program and the promotion of Council roles to Deakin students.
  • Partnering on key funding and grant applications.
  • Exploring shared community safety initiatives.
  • Working together to research and conserve local history.
  • Coordinating restoration activities around Gardiners Creek.
  • Working together on a plan to enhance the Bennettswood Reserve.

The signing of the MOU aligns with Whitehorse Council’s Integrated Council Plan 2025-2029. This sets out a shared roadmap for the future of Whitehorse and will guide Council’s program of works until 2029.
