Sustainable climate and environmental care is a key focus for Council.
Our Climate Response Strategy ( PDF 13MB) and Climate Response Plan ( PDF 6.49MB), adopted by Council on 27 November 2023 after declaring a Climate Emergency on 12 September 2022, guides our efforts to address climate change. Alongside other sustainability strategies, the Climate Response Strategy supports Council's leadership in addressing climate change consistent with Whitehorse’s Community Vision 2040.
The Strategy and Plan were amended following a Council resolution on 26 May 2025. Our revised Climate Response Strategy targets are:
- Source 100 per cent renewable electricity for Council operations by 2025 (achieved).
- Aspire for net zero corporate emissions.
- Aspire for net zero community emissions by 2040.
With this, Council has moved away from the fixed timeline of achieving net zero corporate emissions by 2032. Instead, we will aspire towards net-zero emissions without a specific deadline, allowing us to focus on practical, achievable emission reduction projects while maintaining our environmental commitment. This approach enables us to prioritise direct emission reductions based on available opportunities and resources rather than being constrained by an arbitrary timeline.
