Happy New Year. Christmas saw wonderful festivities around Kingsley. Hamilton Street Christmas Jazz embodied community spirit with Santa and carols. Thank you to the Mont Albert Village Business and Gardening Groups and council officers for this
terrific celebration.

Don't miss Movies Under the Stars run by Friends of Mont Albert Reserve and Mont Albert Cricket Club including ‘The Castle’ on Friday 23 January and ‘Ratatouille’ on Friday 6 March, 7.30pm at the Reserve.

Welcome to Mitcham, Woolworths! After a 6-month gap following the closure of Coles, Woolworths officially opened its doors last month — fantastic news for local residents and small businesses. This major investment, worth millions, has created more than 100 local jobs. On opening day, I spoke with many excited shoppers and business owners who shared their optimism about the future of retail in Britannia Mall and across Mitcham.

It’s also great to see Dark Stallion Café expanding into the new Dark Horse Restaurant, and the Rotary Op Shop reopening — more positive signs of a thriving local precinct.

Your weekly red bin is saved. We rejected a fortnightly collection option, listening to the majority of community feedback.

Council recently adopted a 15-year masterplan for Wurundjeri Walk, and a new dog off lead area will be considered nearby in response to community requests.

Get fit in 2026. Explore joining Avenue Neighbourhood House’s exercise classes, Eley Park Tennis Club, Burwood Brickworks Mall Walkers, or volunteer at Bungalook Plant Nursery.

Meet your councillor on Saturday 17 January: Peach Orchard Grove café at 10am and Burwood Brickworks Woolworths at 1pm.

Local playgrounds are great spaces for children's development and provide a great social space for parents and grandparents to meet and socialise. I am delighted that we’ve now completed 4 major local park renovations at Elgar Park (next to the miniature railway)
Tie Street, Springfield Park and Memorial Park ‘Crocodile Park’. The ‘Crocodiles’ from the old playground, which have delighted generations of locals, have been preserved and returned to the park as requested in the community consultation. With all the latest safety adventure features I am sure these new facilities will provide many years of benefits for all ages.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Thanks to your feedback, Council will keep the weekly garbage collection when the new waste service starts in 2027. I’ll share more soon about adding food and organic waste to our standard service offering to help reduce landfill.

Great news — the Box Hill Chinese New Year Festival returns on Saturday 21 February 2026 at Bank Street, Box Hill, from 10am to midnight. If you’re heading along, please consider using public transport.
