Building a Better City Design Awards
15 Oct 2009
Whitehorse Council is looking for nominations for the municipality’s best designed buildings and landscapes of 2009 for its annual design awards.
Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Helen Harris OAM said building and landscape designs made a huge difference to the streetscape and character of our neighbourhoods.
“Council understands the importance of good design and wants to reward those who are making a positive difference,” Cr Harris said.
The Building a Better City Design Awards aim to recognise owners, builders, developers, architects, landscape architects and planning consultants for creating innovative building and landscape designs in our community.
Nominations are open for the awards, which are now in their 12th year. The Building a Better City Design Awards presentation is held in March/April each year as part of Council's Sustainable Living Week.
“Good design is encouraged throughout the municipality to incorporate sustainable practices such as drought-tolerant landscaping, water sensitivity or the use of recycled products into the built environment,” Cr Harris said.
The award categories are:
- Best New Dwelling
- Best New Medium Density Development (three units or less)
- Best New Medium Density Development (four units or more)
- Best New Apartment Building (three storeys or more)
- Best New Commercial/Institutional Building
- Best Landscape Design (commercial or residential)
- Best Exterior Renovation
- Environmental Sustainability (commercial or residential)
- Best Heritage Development
- Mayoral Award (all nominees are considered for this prestigious award)
Designs are judged on a number of criteria including compliance with relevant legislation and Council guidelines, a positive contribution to neighbourhood character, creation of functional and innovative designs, and the implementation of sustainable principles.
Developments must have been completed in 2009.
Nominations for the 2009 Building a Better City Design Awards close on 31 January 2010.
