Council’s Sustainable Living Week runs from 30 May-7 June this year and is packed full of talented experts set to educate and entertain on ways to achieve a better lifestyle, community and household budget.
Whitehorse Councillor Prue Cutts said the annual event grew each year, and audiences gain a wealth of information on sustainable gardening, low or zero-waste living, money-saving changes to energy use and more.
“This event is a much anticipated one on the Whitehorse calendar and is full of fun and free information sessions and workshops,” Cr Cutts said.
“Council is proud to host a brilliant range of activities during Sustainable Living Week each year and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to join in.”
Program highlights include:
People, Places and the Environment on 31 May
Hear speakers from Kennedy Nolan Architects and SBLA Studio talk about a range of projects involving working with communities to make places that are good for people and the environment.
Movie Night: An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power on Friday 1 June
A decade after Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth comes the riveting follow-up that shows just how close we are to a real energy revolution. The movie will be introduced by a climate leader from The Climate Reality Project who has been personally trained by Mr Gore on climate change communication.
Clothes Swap – Fashion with a conscience on Saturday 2 June
Kirsta Hawkins, founder of Melbourne second-hand clothing store Mutual Muse, will shed light on how making mindful fashion choices can avoid clothing waste, help us live more simply and lessen our impact on the planet.
The Rogue Ginger – an afternoon with Erin Rhoads on Saturday 2 June
Learn how popular eco-lifestyle blogger Erin became zero waste and plastic free and how you can do it too!
Ask Costa: Gardening Forum hosted by Costa Georgiadis on Sunday 3 June
Sustainable gardening discussions including an opportunity to ask Costa all your gardening questions. Workshops will follow where you could learn how to make garden sprays, how to garden in small spaces or the art of attracting beneficial insects and pollinators to your garden.
Getting Back to Nature Walk on Monday 4 June
Discover the beautiful indigenous bushland, lake and wetlands of Blackburn Lake Sanctuary on this informative guided tour.
Energy Forum: Take the Power Back on Wednesday 6 June
An expert panel discusses issues such as climate change, home energy freedom and efficiency, and how to save with the best energy deals.
Social Food Project – Sustainable Food Practices on Thursday 7 June
Join Ben McMenamin, founder of Social Food Project, for a cooking demonstration that includes his five top tips for improving sustainable food practices at home. Sample some of Ben’s dishes while you’re there!
